Painting is a form of art very few people are able to do. This is because making beautiful and truly artistic, lifelike paintings is not easy and it requires both skill and talent to be able to create such a masterpiece. However, even if you’re not really talented in the field of art, you can still learn how to paint. You just need to be given the proper training, practice, and instructions, to be able to really get the hang of such art.

There are a lot of materials used in painting. There are coloring materials varied according to their chemical composition, paintbrushes of different sizes and thicknesses, and mediums which can smooth or rough, big or small. For beginners, it’s ideal to paint using the simplest materials. Typically, the most common coloring material used by new painting students is watercolor because it’s easiest to manipulate. The medium is usually white paper or Oslo paper, since rough paper is better to use to allow the colors of the watercolor to stick better. The paintbrushes for beginners don’t need to vary much. Most of the time, beginners only use one paintbrush for making any kind of amateur painting.

For a more challenging painting activity, oil paint is an excellent medium. Oil paint is a complex form of coloring material. It requires more precision, intellect, and artistic approaches in order to be utilized properly. You can’t just use oil paints in the same way that you would watercolor. The texture and viscosity of oil paint makes it hard to manipulate. Therefore, you will need to be patient from beginning to end if you really want to learn how to make an oil painting.

The first thing you need to do is to prepare the materials that you will be using for your oil painting. You need to have the complete materials so that you will be able to avoid problems during the process of painting itself. Your concentration must be focused on the subject of your work and not in the aim to find a missing oil paint or brush. The oil paint must have all the basic painting colors and the brushes must vary from sizes small to large. The palette is an important tool for you to be able to mix colors in the most preferable method. The medium to use is ideally canvas, as oil paints tend to last longer on canvas than on other media.

Once prepared, you need to set the subject of the painting. Find your inspiration. What do you want to paint about? What interests you the most? For a beginner, more than your personal interest, it would be better to use all-time favorite themes and subjects for paintings like flowers, sceneries, or people. You can also copy a very popular painting, preferable of the same subjects as previously stated. This will help you better practice the precision and detailing of the painting, and it should lessen your time in doing your masterpiece because the image and the colors are already there for you to follow.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to making oil paintings is that you should maintain the consistency of your oil paints. This can be quite difficult because the oil paint is not as fluid and easily changeable according to your preferences and desires. You need to practice color combinations and fluidity in your oil paints, since too thick applications of paint can ruin the entire masterpiece, especially if the colors of the images to be painted are light. Finally, don’t forget to apply proper shading and shadowing to all of your artworks.
